At the end of the second world war, Dame Laura Knight, the war artist, sought permission to paint the trials of the major German war criminals. In The Nuremberg Trial (1946) she departed from her realist style and incorporated the smouldering, nightmarish ruins of the Bavarian city itself into the court scene.
