Top Ten Conservative Illusions

And to complement the Top Ten Liberal Illusions, here is my take on the Top Ten Conservative Illusions that are in some respects complementary:

  1. Wealth creation is important, but income distribution and the fact that 52% of the growth in GNP 1993-2008 went to the top 1% of the population is not
  2. You can fix the Federal deficit without raising taxes
  3. Most government spending (except for the military) is innately wrong
  4. It is more important that conservatives are united than right
  5. The environment doesn’t matter and climate change is not caused by human activity or is not happening at all
  6. Military expenditure is never wasteful
  7. Wall Street does not need regulating, and should be allowed to fail even if it takes the rest of the economy down with it as in the 1930s
  8. The government has no role in managing the overall economy or in maintaining key industries, despite the experience of China that does both rather well
  9. Medicare and Social Security  are inherently un-affordable, but this view is electoral suicide and can’t be admitted
  10. It is not necessary to listen to the other side in politics because they are generally a pretty evil bunch

About creativeconflictwisdom

I spent 32 years in a Fortune Five company working on conflict: organizational, labor relations and senior management. I have consulted in a dozen different business sectors and the US Military. I work with a local environmental non profit. I have written a book on the neuroscience of conflict, and its implications for conflict handling called Creative Conflict Wisdom (forthcoming).
